Tesco opens its first cash-free high street store

Tesco has opened its first high street cashless store. Shoppers can only pay at self-service tills using electronic payment methods, including debit cards, credit cards and Apple Pay on their phones at the Tesco Express store on High Holborn in central London.

The supermarket giant opened a cash-free outlet used mainly by staff at its Welwyn Garden City headquarters campus in 2018. Customers there are also trusted to use a checkout-free method of payment where they scan products on mobile devices.

Tesco said the High Holborn store had been chosen because it serves a high concentration of office workers and would help customers pass through more quickly. "We are looking forward to hearing customer feedback," the firm said.
