Tesco Mobile to hike cost of calls and texts outside your allowance from next month

Tesco Mobile is hiking the cost of certain services for pay monthly and pay-as-you-go customers from next month.

Pay monthly customers will fork out more than double the current cost of what they’re currently charged for exceeding their call allowance from February 9.

The price of making a call if you go over your allowance is going up from 25p per minute (plus a 10p minimum charge) to 55p (27p minimum charge).

Meanwhile, sending a text outside of your monthly package will jump up from 10p per message to 20p, while it will cost 55p per minute to listen to your voicemail instead of 15p.

Using your mobile data after exceeding your allowance will remain the same at 10p per megabyte.

Both pay monthly and pay-as-you-go users will also see an increase in charges for using out-of-bundle services, also from February 9.

The cost of sending a picture message is rising from 25p per message to 55p, while calling a non-standard number is jumping from 20p per minute (plus a 10p minimum charge) to 55p (27p minimum charge).

Calling a 084/087/09/118 number is jumping from 25p per minute (plus a 25p minimum charge) to 55p (55p minimum charge) along with a service charge.

You’ll also be charged more for calling international numbers; rising from 25p per minute (plus a 10p minimum charge) to £1 (27p minimum charge) for International Zone 1 calls.

The price increase will be from 40p per minute (10p minimum charge) to £1.49 (27p minimum charge) for International Zone 2 calls, and £1.49 per minute (10p minimum charge) to £2 (27p minimum charge) for International Zone 3 calls.

The cost of using data outside of a bundle is rising too, with a 500mb one-off data bundle increasing from £2.50 to £3 and a 100GB one-off data bundle going up from £50 to £55.

To avoid the increased charges, you’ll need to stick within your call and text limits and avoid going outside your bundle.

If you’re unhappy about the charges, you should be able to cancel your Tesco Mobile deal if you’re out of contract or on a rolling price plan, or pay-as-you-go SIM.

You should compare prices of other mobile network charges to make sure you're getting the best deal for how many calls, text and data you need.

Use comparison websites such as Uswitch.com and Moneysupermarket.com to see the latest prices.

If you’re still locked into a contract, you won’t be able to cancel without paying an exit fee.

The base price of pay monthly and pay-as-you-go contracts remain unaffected as Tesco has a “Tariff Promise” in place.

A Tesco Mobile spokesperson told MoneySavingExpert : "We’ve contacted our customers to let them know that the cost of out of bundle services is changing.

“Customers will only be impacted if they choose to use certain services, such as non-standard calls, or if they exceed their monthly allowance. If not, their standard monthly bill remains the same.”
