A TESCO lorry "melted into the tarmac" of the A9 after it was engulfed in flames yesterday morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Wednesday morning due to a vehicle fire, with crews from three appliances sent to dampen down the flames.

From around 6am until 5pm, firefighters remained at the scene with the road reopening at 5.39pm.

Auto Services Perth later shared pictures on social media, telling followers the recovery was a difficult task due to the HGV “melting into the tarmac”.

A post read: “Busy day for our heavy recovery team. A burnt-out lorry caused chaos on the A9 near Dunkeld.

“A fantastic effort from all involved to clear the road. A real task when it melts to the tarmac!

“Big thanks to the SFRS for dealing with the fire, assisting on scene, escorting us back to Perth and putting the fire out again (twice!) when it re-ignited on the back of our truck.”

The scene has now been passed to BEAR Scotland with no injuries reported.

First Minister John Swinney, the MSP for Perth and Kinross, said he was “relieved” and "grateful" to those who extinguished the fire.

“I am grateful to the emergency services for their quick intervention and the steps they have taken to keep the public safe,” he said.

“I am relieved that there have been no injuries as a result of this incident, and I would ask drivers to follow the guidance laid out by Police Scotland to avoid the area and to follow diversions.”

Police Scotland said on Wednesday: “The A9 north and southbound carriageways south of Dunkeld have reopened following a lorry fire.

“Drivers are thanked for their patience.”
