Tesco launches text sommelier service for on-demand wine pairings

Don’t make a pour decision: the service will help shoppers find their perfect bottle

Tesco are offering to give diners a little help with their drinks this month, as the supermarket has partnered with sommeliers and waiters across the country to offer suggested wine pairing over text.

From now until April 16, 20 sommeliers and experts headed up by wine writer Helen McGinn will be on hand to suggest the best bottle to go with food, whether its bubbles for brunch or something special for Sunday lunch.

To get a recommendation, users should text “WINE” to 82228 between noon and 7pm. They will be asked what’s on the menu, a rough price range and any usual preferences, including of colour, grapes, styles, regions, flavours and brands.

The initial message will cost users their usual rate – subsequent texts will be free – and replies are promised within half an hour.

The supermarket will donate £1 from every recommendation to the charity Hospitality Action, an organisation that supports both current and former hospitality workers who have fallen on hard times. Tesco say they expect to donate at least £3000 to the group.

It is not the first time in recent times Hospitality Action have benefited from wine, with Australia’s Bird in Hand winery donating every penny from every bottle sold on its website – and not just the profits – to the charity between February 22 and March 8 this year.
