Tesco has issued an urgent recall for one of its most popular beauty products.
Shoppers who have purchased the Kind & Pure Facial Cleansing Wipes have been advised to return the product to a store for a full refund after detecting a ‘microbiological risk’ that could pose serious harm to customers’ health.
During a test, a bacteria called Pluralibacter gergoviae was detected, which can be particularly harmful for people with sensitive skin.
“As a precautionary measure, Tesco is recalling various Tesco Kind & Pure Facial Cleansing Wipes due to unsatisfactory microbiological testing and detecting the presence of Pluralibacter gergoviae, which can make these products potentially unsafe for use,” Tesco said in the product recall statement.
Pluralibacter gergoviae usually carries a low health risk, but it can also cause severe infections in people with weakened immune systems or chronic illnesses. It has been linked to respiratory diseases, eye infections, urinary tract infections and sepsis, according to UK testing laboratory Melbec Microbiology.
Tesco Kind & Pure 25 Facial Cleansing Wipes 163g and Tesco Kind & Pure Radiant Facial Cleansing Wipes Vitamin C 25 Pack 159g are included in the recall.
OPSS said: “The product does not meet the requirements of Regulation (EC) 1223/2009 or the Cosmetic Products Enforcement Regulations 2013.”
The announcement is one of several recalls enacted by the British supermarket in recent months.
Last month, Tesco recalled three pasta salads and Wall’s Classic Scotch Eggs due to possible salmonella contamination.
The retailer also recalled four Meals Made Easy products in Northern Ireland stores due to the potential presence of Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause meningitis.
