Tesco issues recall for taleggio cheese after discovering listeria contamination

Tesco has recalled an Italian cheese it sells after learning it is contaminated with listeria, which can cause severe sickness if consumed.

The company has issued the recall for Tesco Finest Taleggio 200g with a use by date of January 25, including all batch codes for the product.

The symptoms people face if they consume listeria are "similar to flu" including a fever, aches, chills, sickness and diarrhoea.

A risk statement from the firm reads: "The presence of Listeria monocytogenes in the product listed above.

"Symptoms caused by this organism can be similar to flu and include high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea.

"Some people are more vulnerable to listeria infections, including those over 65 years of age, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies less than one month old and people with weakened immune systems."

Customers have been asked to return the product to the store where they will get a full refund.
