Tesco launching new one-hour food delivery service for busy households in the UK

Tesco is trialling a new rapid delivery service that gets food to customers’ doors within an hour.

The new “Whoosh” service is being tested in the Midlands but could be rolled out to other parts of the UK if it proves successful.

The one-hour delivery is currently available for customers who live near its Wolverhampton Willenhall Express store.

Tesco said shoppers can order the service through its app or Tesco.com, with products delivered by bike, moped or car for a £5 fee.

There is also an additional £2 charge if you spend under £15.

In comparison, the quick delivery is 50p more expensive than the flat-rate £4.50 Tesco charges on most other delivery orders.

There is also normally an extra £4 charge from Tesco if you spend under £40.

Orders from its customer fulfilment centres are charged at £5.50, and there is the same £40 minimum spend.

Supermarkets have seen unprecedented demand for home delivery services during the coronavirus pandemic, with Tesco adding hundreds of thousands of extra slots as more shoppers use the service.

The spike in online services has also seen other grocers launch quick delivery services in recent months.

For example, Morrisons, Aldi and the Co-op are now available for customers to order on Deliveroo and Uber Eats.

Meanwhile, Sainsbury’s has a “Chop Chop” rapid delivery business, as well as services through Deliveroo and Uber Eats.

Waitrose has also expanded its collaboration with Deliveroo, recently confirming a two-year deal and upping its range of products available to from 750 to 1,000.

Chris Poad, online managing director, said: “Customers are telling us that they would welcome the addition of a 60-minute delivery to their door option as part of our online grocery service.

“We’ll use the pilot to understand how Whoosh could work best for both our customers and our colleagues.”
