Tesco is introducing special vegan zones in its stores - and it starts this week

Plant-based food is quickly becoming the most popular culinary trend of the decade, and so to keep customers happy, Tesco has just made some major changes.

Starting today, Tesco will now have dedicated plant-based and vegetarian zones in stores for the first time ever, to make its vegan offerings easier to find.

With meat alternatives also soaring in popularity, the supermarket giant will also be displaying some plant-based foods in the meat aisle - a change which will begin with fresh food before being expanded out into other parts of the store.

For example, items like their new £3 Wicked Kitchen shredded mushroom and £2 vegan breaded goujons will now sit in the meat, fish and poultry aisle alongside traditional beef, pork and lamb mince, potentially tempting customers into opting for a a more planet-friendly substitute instead.

As well as the structural changes in store, Tesco will also be adding even more foods to its existing Wicked Kitchen range, plus a new plant-based range called Tesco Plant Chef - meaning that the supermarket now boasts the biggest plant-based food selection in UK supermarkets.

Tesco has increased its dedicated plant based range by a whopping 48 per cent, rising from 181 to 267 new foods, including its own brand ranges which will increase from 62 to 103, whilst branded ranges will also expand, going from 119 to 164.

However, its competitors are catching up, with Waitrose stocking a total of 61 vegan products in their dedicated chilled section with 33 of those own-brand, including best sellers Waitrose Vegan Spinach Ravioli and Vegan Stonebaked Margherita Pizza.

But they are noticing similar trends amongst their customers, with the fancy supermarket telling us that they've noticed that sales of their chilled vegetarian and vegan range are up 40% vs last year, reflecting the sheer popularity of the vegan and vegetarian trend.

There's no word yet on whether the likes of Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury's have also spotted similar habits amongst their customers yet,
