Tesco Ireland v Dunnes Stores price wars: who wins on face masks and sanitiser?

Bread, milk, eggs, tea ... personal protective equipment?

When it comes to the weekly shop, there's a new essential in town – Covid-19 gear.

And unearthing the supermarket that sells face masks, sanitiser and visors is now an important job for many households.

Never fear, though – you don't need to shop around to find out where you can get the best bang for your Covid buck.

We've done the job for you, with a long, hard look at Tesco and Dunnes to figure out where savings can be found and pennies can be pinched.

Face coverings

Tesco has a limited selection of face coverings for sale – offering a five-pack of reusable masks for the reasonable price of €9.

Dunnes, meanwhile, is selling smaller packs – for women, men and kids – for prices in the region of €4.50.

Verdict: The Tesco offering probably has the edge.

Sanitiser

Both shops are better stocked when it comes to sanitiser. Tesco has the edge, though, with versions of the cleansing product in many sizes and from seven different brands.

Dunnes has a Cuticura anti-bacterial gel – in 100ml and 250ml bottles – for sale: they cost €2.16 and €4.43 respectively.

Antibacterial spray

Over the course of the pandemic, we've all been reminded of the importance of keeping the house clean and tidy. And antibacterial sprays – a staple of most kitchens – are now in vogue more than ever before.

Milton, Cif and Dettol are the three biggies in the spray market, and Tesco probably shades it on price for these, but Dunnes does have a wider range of products on sale.

Verdict: Tesco for price, Dunnes for variety

Wipes

Antibacterial wipes are another big winner out of the Covid-19 pandemic, with households countrywide cleaning frantically to ward off the possibility of germs.

Tesco's selection is the better here, with its line of own-brand wipes giving it a distinct edge.

Verdict: Tesco
