Tesco Ireland has revealed the most popular grocery items set to be checked out in the final hour of shopping on Christmas Eve.
With just one more sleep to the big day, the last-minute Christmas shop looks a little different in 2020, some things never change, including the need for essentials such as milk, bread and seasonal treats.
In 2019, avocados made their debut on the annual list but doesn’t make the grade this year as customers go back to traditional rituals.
The most up to date statistics from Tesco reveal that the last-minute shoppers are looking for:
- Soft drinks
- Seasonal confectionery
- Crisps, snacks and nuts
- Indulgent chocolate
- Essentials (clothing such as socks)
- Biscuits
- Milk
- Cheese
- Toys
- Bread
This year it looks like shoppers are focussing on the basics in terms of the grocery shop.
Ambient products like soft drinks, confectionery, crisps and biscuits are the top priority for most.
The inclusion of cheese and nuts on the list suggests we can expect to see an increase in the use of #GrazingBoard across social media this festive season.
The inclusion of bread suggests that turkey and ham sandwiches will be in ready supply as families tuck into leftovers over the Christmas season. In recent research* by Tesco, respondents voted for their favourite ways to use leftovers with sandwiches (41%) coming out on top. Sandwiches are followed by Curry (18%), cold salad (9%) and soup (9%).
Most Tesco stores will open until 7pm on Christmas Eve, with select stores until 9pm
