Front-facing cameras are being trialled at self-service checkouts in some Irish Tesco stores.
The supermarket giant has rolled out the subtle new feature in six of its shops nationwide.
A spokesperson for the company said that the new feature is for customer security and are in line with GDPR guidelines.
For those who haven't noticed them yet, a person's face will appear on the top right of the screen with the camera fixed on you.
A Tesco spokesperson said “In six of our stores we are currently trialling front-facing cameras on self-service checkouts. The purpose of these cameras is to provide an additional security measure for customers when checking out. This trial is operating in line with GDPR requirements.”
One customer asked online what the new feature was describing it as "creepy".
The supermarket did not say which six stores you will find the new feature in but it will be clearly marked once you are in store.
It comes after news that over 40 of the retail giant's stores will operate the rolling 24-hour schedule in order to "support a safe and easy shopping experience for customers during the festive season."
And many will operate on an extended schedule – opening from 7am until midnight – from December 18 until December 21.
The 24-hour opening means you can pop into Tesco at literally any time between December 21 and 24 – as long as your local store is one of those involved in the extended opening.
