Tesco Ireland applauded by shoppers after urging people not to buy alcohol at their stores

Tesco Ireland have been widely praised after a post on social media which urged customers not to shop for alcohol in their stores - instead pushing them to head to their local pub.

The supermarket took to their Instagram and Facebook pages on Tuesday afternoon with a picture of a lovely pint.

But emblazoned atop the booze was an important message from the big name shop.

It read: "Pop to your local if you can.

"Pubs have had it tough this year. That's why, instead of showing you our great offers, we're using this space to ask you to support them instead (as long as you feel safe to do so). Because right now, every little helps."

They added a caption to the post, which read "Now go out there and show the pubs some love! (if you feel safe doing so of course)"

People were quick to praise the supermarket in the comments.

One lady said: "Fair play tesco everyone who wants to go enjoy yourselves and stay safe."

A second said: "I read your advertisement in the newspaper and I thought it was very good of Tesco to do what you did,the world would be a better place if everyone supported each other so well done the pubs have had it rough." with another adding "I’m very impressed that they want to share there good will gesture with there opponents the pubs. I do enjoy a night out with friends to our own local & we missed that & the music. So far things are looking up. Stay positive & stay safe everyone."
