Tesco introduces compulsory checks inside all shoppers' cars during hot weather

With temperatures soaring past 30 degrees, supermarket shoppers visiting stores like Tesco, Aldi, ASDA, Lidl, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and M&S may choose to visit in their cars instead of walking or getting public transport.

But unfortunately, some drivers still take their dogs with them, and can leave them for long periods of time - something which can prove fatal in the heat.

Over the weekend, Tesco confirmed it would be making sure dogs are not left by owners in hot vehicles.

Tesco staff have been trained on what to look out for.

Tesco confirmed: "We're working with the RSPCA & all of our colleagues in store have received training to ensure animal welfare is protected. Our colleagues regularly patrol our car parks & are given guidance on what to do if they spot a dog unattended in a car."

Shoppers have now praised the initiative, with many thanking the supermarket for being so proactive.

The initiative has already been labelled 'brilliant' and 'amazing', and shoppers are urging other supermarkets to do the same.

The heatwave could prove fatal for dogs if owners don't take the right precautions.

Emergency animal care provider Vets Now also warned rising temperatures could increase the risk of heat stroke in dogs.

The vet service sees a spike in callouts as the weather warms up and has warned that temperatures above 20C put dogs at risk, and that survival rates for dogs with heat stroke is just 50%, reports Birmingham Live.

Dave Leicester, head of telehealth at Vets Now, said: "All dogs can overheat if left without water or in hot conditions for too long. So on hotter summer days it's best to walk your dog in the morning or evening when it's cooler."
