Tesco has pulled these £1 Halloween 'zombie knives' from its shelves following complaints from customers

Tesco has stopped selling these Halloween 'zombie knives' following complaints from customers.

It comes after the £1 plastic knives were criticised for glamourising violence.

The Manchester Evening News was contacted by a parents, who complained to Tesco after spotting the costume knives on sale at the supermarket's Stalybridge branch.

"All we see every week is knives, yet we are selling these to kids," the woman, who asked not to be named, said.

"In every picture you see in all the horrible murders that are happening there is a picture of knife like this.

"Just last weekend, we had the knife attack at the Arndale.

"Everyone is doing their best to crack down on knife crime, but Tesco is selling these.

"What kind of message does that send?"

After being contacted by the M.E.N. Tesco confirmed it had withdrawn the knives from sale.

A spokesman said: "Whilst these items are completely safe and were intended for Halloween fancy dress only, we fully recognise that some customers may find them inappropriate.

"We apologise and have decided to remove them from sale."

Zombie knives earned their nickname as they often mimic weapons used in horror films.

They often have serrated edges and words etched into them, which critics say helps glamourise violence.

Earlier this year then Home Secretary Sajid Javid promised he would crack down on online sales of the blades.

He said: "I want to ensure we do all we can to tackle rising knife crime.

"Used wrongly, all knives are dangerous. I’ll restrict all online knife sales so they must be delivered to a non-residential address.

"There’s no reason anyone needs zombie knives.

"But if police raid your house and you have one, they are powerless to act."
