Tesco gives message to any shoppers who buy toilet roll at supermarket

Supermarket giant Tesco has made a change to its toilet roll product.

Its big pack of 24 toilet rolls has been swapped out for a 12 pack of "tightly wrapped" rolls.

The supermarket announced that it was reducing the size of its loo rolls in a bit to save on packaging and haulage.

It says that it is taking advantage of a new way of winding toilet paper more tightly onto cardboard tubes, Birmingham Live reports.

By putting twice as much paper on a roll, Tesco has reduced the size of its large pack significantly - taking a 24 pack down to a dozen rolls.

It says that less plastic is now needed to pack them, customers can fit more in their cupboards and that double-wind rolls will last twice as long on the holder.

Alongside this, Tesco will need fewer lorries to transport the rolls to stores - 17 fewer lorries a week.

The supermarket says that it will save 67 tonnes of plastic packaging a year with the change.

As well as getting rid of the 24 pack of loo rolls, Tesco will also shrink the rolls in its four and nine-roll packs.

Further reductions are planned for 2022.

Katie Frost, buying manager at Tesco, said: “As well as removing unnecessary plastic, reducing the size of multipacks will free up valuable space in our lorries that can be put to great use this Christmas.

“We are looking at a number of ways to use less packaging as a part of our 4Rs packaging strategy. In the last few years, we have cut six thousand tonnes of packaging from products, including a billion pieces of plastic.”
