Tesco explains why staff were spotted not wearing face masks at its stores

Not all staff at Tesco will be wearing a face masks, the supermarket confirmed on Twitter today.

The supermarket giant has cleared up confusion for customers ahead of their next visit to its stores after face masks became mandatory for all shoppers in England on Friday, July 24.

Currently, only those exempt for medical reasons are permitted to not wear a mask. Those who ignore the rules could face a £100 fine.

On Twitter, one customer tweeted Tesco to ask why its staff were not wearing face masks during a recent visit.

The customer said: "Nice to see that all the customers this morning was wearing a face mask. Not 1 staff member was wearing any. I wonder why the policy is different if you work there?"

However Tesco replied to say although all customer-facing staff members are being asked to wear face coverings some may not be due to medical or safety reasons.

Tesco said: "Morning Bean, we’ve asked all our customer-facing colleagues to wear face coverings. There may be some colleagues, though, who are not wearing masks for medical or safety reasons. These reasons are set out by the government. TY - Ben"
