Tesco explains the real reason prices are higher if you don't have a Clubcard

Recently, Tesco have impressed customers across the nation with their huge Clubcard discounts. The supermarket chain have now explained the real reason behind the difference in prices with and without the card.

Last week, Tesco slashed the price of their meat selection by 50 per cent for Clubcard holders, causing a Black Friday-type frenzy amongst customers. Christmas items have also been put out with huge discounts for Clubcard members, spurring more customers to sign up.

Alcohol is another hot topic, Tesco reduced their one litre of Baileys to £9.50 from £20 - making them cheaper than those who bought in ASDA, Morrisons and Sainsbury's, as The Manchester Evening News report.

Around 80 per cent of transactions at large Tesco stores in the UK now use a Clubcard - meaning non-Clubcard holders are a minority.

Yesterday, the Daily Mail found that a basket of branded products costing £42.40 without a Clubcard was slashed by almost a third after Clubcard discounts - being lowered to £29.22.

They found the same basket would cost £32.07 in ASDA, £35.30 in Sainsbury's or £34.58 in Morrisons.

So while the basket of items was the cheapest out of the Big Four with a Clubcard, it was also the most expensive without one.

There have even been claim that prices have been increased for non-Clubcard holders, although Tesco have denied these claims.

The Manchester Evening News asked Tesco what allowed them to significantly lower prices between Clubcard and non-Clubcard members, to which they responded that shared customer data allows them to target specific items to reduce in price.

They said: "We're delighted that this analysis has recognised that Tesco Clubcard customers get the best value of any major supermarket when they shop with us – and over 20m of our customers who regularly use Clubcard for their shop agree.

"We make it easy for customers to make choices about the data they share, and you can have a Clubcard and benefit from Clubcard Prices while choosing not to receive targeted marketing. We only ever use data that customers have agreed to share with Tesco, which allows us to personalise our offers.

"So, for example, if you’re looking for a bottle of red wine for Christmas, and there’s a great offer on the wine you usually buy, it’s helpful for us to let you know."
