Tesco expands one-hour home delivery to 11 more shops - check if your local is included

Supermarket giant Tesco has expanded its one-hour rapid home delivery to 11 more stores in the UK.

The super quick “Whoosh” service was being trialled at its Wolverhampton Willenhall Express shop in the Midlands last month as part of a test-run.

But Tesco has now confirmed that the speedy delivery will be rolled out to more shops across London and Bristol.

Tesco shoppers can order food through the service via the supermarket’s app or Tesco.com, with products delivered by bike, moped or car for a £5 fee.

There is also an additional £2 charge if you spend under £15.

If the service is available in your area, it should come up as a delivery option when you type in your postcode.

“Whoosh” is 50p more expensive than the flat-rate £4.50 Tesco charges on typical delivery orders, or £1 dearer than the £5.50 fee from customer fulfilment centres.

There is also normally an extra £4 charge from Tesco if you spend under £40.

Home delivery services have seen a huge spike in customer numbers due to the coronavirus pandemic, with Tesco adding hundreds of thousands of extra slots as more shoppers use the service.

Other supermarkets have also taken to launching similar quick services to help cope with the demand.

For example, Morrisons, Aldi and the Co-op are now available for customers to order on Deliveroo and Uber Eats.

Meanwhile, Sainsbury’s has a “Chop Chop” rapid delivery business, as well as services through Deliveroo and Uber Eats.

Waitrose has also expanded its collaboration with Deliveroo, recently confirming a two-year deal and upping its range of products available to from 750 to 1,000.

Tesco chief executive Ken Murphy was quoted in Retail Gazette as saying the Wolverhampton trial of the “Whoosh” service threw up some “very interesting data”.

He said: “The truth is that we are not sure yet about the economic proposition and we’re not entirely sure about what the customer need is.

"Is it 10 minutes? Is it half an hour? Is it an hour?

“I would describe our view on it as we’re very curious about what the proposition could look like.”
