Tesco delivery driver 'shot in face with ball bearing' in Tallaght, Dublin

An investigation is underway after a Tesco delivery driver was allegedly shot in the face with a ball bearing.

The man received a cut below his eye in the incident whilst he was driving a van.

It has been reported that an object smashed through the closed driver-side window before striking the driver.

A ball bearing was reportedly found among the shards of broken glass.

Gardai confirmed they are enquiring about the incident in Killinarden Hill, Tallaght on Thursday, April 4.

The driver said: "I was coming from Ellensborough, heading towards Sundale, when I heard an unmerciful bang at the side of the van.

"Then the glass from the van window came in on me, and I felt burning on my face."

He told the Echo: "It all took place within milliseconds, and when the glass came in on me, I came to a stop.

"I got out of the van to see what happened and people in their cars were pointing at my face. I put my hand up to my face and blood was coming out of my cheek."

A garda spokesperson told the Irish Mirror: "Gardaí in Tallaght are investigating an incident on 4 April 2019 where a Tesco delivery driver was struck in the face by an object that came through the window of his vehicle.

"Gardaí from Tallaght attended the call and the driver subsequently was treated by his own GP.

"Gardaí have been in contact with Tesco Security with a view to arranging a meeting attended by the District Officer and Divisional Crime Prevention Office to address the safety concerns of Tesco drivers delivering in the area."

A Tesco spokesperson said: "From time to time we may curtail services in an area for a period of time due to incidents of anti-social behaviour in order to protect our colleagues and our customers.

"At present following several incidents, we are curtailing deliveries in a small number of areas in West Tallaght with an alternative collection option open to customers at Clondalkin and Naas.

"While we appreciate the inconvenience caused, the safety of our colleagues and customers is of paramount importance."
