Tesco creating 1,000 Christmas jobs in Wales

Supermarket giant Tesco is recruiting 1,000 temporary staff in Wales for the crucial Christmas trading period.

Across the UK Tesco is creating for more than 11,000 temporary staff.

It said it will welcome back anyone employed over the last 12 months, especially people who helped out during the initial months of lockdown back in the spring.

The roles will include picking for online deliveries and store replenishment, supporting existing staff.

Tesco people director Rachel Bushby said: “We had a fantastic response for temporary jobs during the spring lockdown and we’d love to hear back from anyone who worked here then.

“We’re looking for people who enjoy working as part of a team and are prepared to go that extra mile in order to help our customers.”

Once the seasonal period comes to an end, Tesco said Christmas recruits will be encouraged to apply for permanent roles available in their stores.

Last week Tesco said that pre-tax profits soared to £551m in the first half of 2020  — almost a 29% increase on the same period in 2019.

The retailer said its revenue of £28.7 billion were up 0.7% and sales in the UK and Ireland up more than 8%.

But costs on fighting the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic reached more than £500m.

The business has been focusing on prices in recent months, trying to out-compete rival Aldi, which has been eating into the market share of more established retailers.

The half-year results marked the first outing as boss for Ken Murphy, who took over the reins at the UK’s biggest supermarket last week.

The former Walgreens Boots Alliance executive said that a shift to online shopping at Tesco will continue into the future.
