Tesco Clubcard loses deal with British Airways to get Avios in return for groceries

Tesco Clubcard holders are about to lose the ability to turn points into air miles with British Airways.

As things stand, BA Executive Club members could convert points earned during their daily or weekly grocery shop, mobile and banking, as well as when filling up their car into Avios automatically.

But from January 18, 2021, that deal ends.

BA has informed Executive Club members: "The contract between Avios Group Ltd and Tesco PLC is terminating on 18 January 2021, after which British Airways Executive Club Members will no longer be able to convert their Clubcard points to Avios with Tesco."

Currently, savvy customers can get 600 Avios for £2.50 worth of Clubcard points by converting at the right time.

It's fair to say not everyone was impressed.

One disappointed customer tweeted: "Noooo! British Airways are ending their partnership with Tesco Clubcard. No more buying random slow cookers / washing machines / Beat earphones, selling them on eBay, then converting points > Avios > First / Business Class flights..."

Tesco customers who have have their Clubcard points automatically converted into Avios were also told this will stop from 22 October 2020.

“After the cut-off date for your November statement, from 23 October up to and including 18 January 2021, you can continue to convert your points manually online via the Tesco website,” BA explains on its website.

It added that you can continue to collect Avios on flights, hotels, car hire, experiences through its other partnerships.

Tesco said the decision had been made by BA, and not it.

A Tesco spokesman told Mirror Money: "Clubcard is how our customers get the best value from shopping with Tesco; from Clubcard points that are worth more than any other supermarket loyalty scheme and vouchers that are worth up to three times more than their face value at over 100 Reward Partners, to Clubcard Prices on hundreds of products online and in-store.

"Clubcard customers will still be able to convert points into Avios up until British Airways leaves the scheme in January next year.”
