Tesco Clubcard holders can extend the life of their points by years using a simple trick

Yesterday we reported the news that Tesco has issued a warning to shoppers to use up their Clubcard points before they expire on 29 February.

According to Tesco, in Manchester there are £156,198.50 worth of Clubcard vouchers that have been forgotten about for nearly two years - making the city the biggest culprit for not redeeming their points.

But if you've been saving up your points for a bigger purchase and don't want to spend them before 29 February, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

According to Martin Lewis' website MoneySavingExpert.com, there is a way to stop your points from expiriing.

The site says you'll need to do the following:

  • Make a small purchase on the Tesco Clubcard site (not in store or on other Tesco websites) using a voucher and the remaining balance will then be credited back to your Clubcard account as points.
  • They'll then be reissued as new vouchers (with an expiry date up to two years in the future) when you next get a batch. So if you spend 50p on a £10 voucher, you'll get £9.50 as new vouchers.

MSE says there's no minimum spend required to do this, but you'll want to aim to make your purchase as small as possible if you want to bank as many points as you can. They suggest spending 50p on a restaurant voucher, which will be worth £1.50 in your chosen restaurant.

You'll also need to remember that you're going to have to do this for each individual voucher you have. So while it could be a good method for a larger voucher, for those worth £1, it's not as worthwhile.
