Tesco charge mum three times for £200 shopping leaving her short for family holiday

A family missed out on a camping trip after being left with not enough money when Tesco charged a mum for her shopping three times by mistake.

The woman didn't have enough cash left to buy the tent they needed following the supermarket giant's error.

She noticed the store's blunder when she went to withdraw money from a cash machine the next day.

The parent from Prestatyn, Wales, soon realised the break was not happening after her bank told her they were powerless to correct the mistake.

She has urged others to make sure to check they haven't also fallen victim to a triple charge.

Speaking to North Wales Live, the mum, who asked not to be named, said: "I paid for my shopping in Tesco, Prestatyn last Friday. It came to around £200-ish.

"Since then, Tesco has taken the amount out of my bank three times.

"I only noticed when I drove two hours after work to pick up a tent off Facebook Marketplace for our camping trip at the weekend.

"I went to the cash machine and it said I had no funds, when I knew there was enough money in my account.

"I rang the bank because I could see the multiple amounts on my statement and asked them to refund some of the money so I could at least buy the tent.

"But the bank said I had to wait for five days for the money to go back into my account."

She is now urging Tesco shoppers to check their bank statements after she was charged three times for her weekly shop.

She added: "I'm fuming because not only did I waste two hours driving, I lost out on the tent too.

"This isn't the first time this has happened to me, it's happened before at the petrol pump and in the store.

"Only this time, it was a big amount so I felt it.

"I was so embarrassed when I had to go tell the man selling the tent that my card wouldn't work.

"Then he messaged me to say he had sold it. I was gutted as I've booked the camping trip for this Friday. I'm more gutted about the tent and the holiday.

"Tesco must be aware of this issue as it has happened to a lot of people. They need to sort their tills out.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “It is extremely rare for a customer to be charged more than once for the same transaction and we have processes in place to automatically reverse any duplicate charges.

"We are sorry for any inconvenience this customer has experienced and would encourage them to contact our customer services team so we can investigate and help them”
