Tesco changes Clubcard rewards - check if you're eligible for new coupons and how to get them

Tesco has announced that it is changing the way it gives out Clubcard vouchers to customers - but not all members will be eligible.

The changes mean millions of Tesco customers will receive personalised coupons more often, with extra discounts and bonus points on specific purchases. Chief customer officer, Alessandra Bellini, said: "Our customers love the way their Clubcard helps them save money on their shopping whilst earning Clubcard points to put towards those little treats like days out and restaurant meals, or to help lower the cost of their groceries and fuel.

"This exciting new revamp of our personalised Clubcard Coupons is the latest way we’re rewarding our customers and helping them unlock the power of their Clubcard." However some Clubcard holders are less likely to benefit, according to Money Saving Expert (MSE).

So what exactly do the changes mean, who will be eligible and how can shoppers get the new coupons? Here is the latest information and advice, as reported by Birmingham Live.

How Clubcard coupons are changing

Roughly four million Tesco Clubcard holders will now get personalised coupons every two weeks, rather than every six. Tesco said the new coupons being given will be shaped on customer tastes and shopping habits.

The supermarket hasn't said how much the new coupons will be worth or when the scheme might be expanded to the remaining 16 million Clubcard customers. It's reported that eligible shoppers should get around three coupons each time on average.

Rewards could include bonus points offers and instant discounts that can be used in stores and online. Tesco hasn't put a figure on exactly how much shoppers can expect to save (or earn in points) using the new coupons – but examples seen by MSE include £1 off when you spend £4 on any cheese and 25 extra points on fresh pre-packed carrots.

Who's eligible for the new Clubcard coupons?

The new coupons are for existing Tesco app users only, MSE reports. Those who don't have the app can download it for free from the Apple App store or Google Play Store.

Tesco says it's targeting four million 'digitally engaged' shoppers. This means that if you're completely new to Tesco's apps, you're less likely to get the new coupons. It's unclear yet if Tesco plans to expand the offers to the rest of its Clubcard holders.

Those that currently get their vouchers by post will continue to receive their coupons as before. Tesco hasn't announced any changes for those getting Clubcard offers and statements by post, so it's understood these customers will get personalised coupons in the post up to eight times a year.

How to access the new Tesco Clubcard coupons

The older Tesco Clubcard app is being phased out and will close in 2023 as it's merged into the shared app. Shoppers will reportedly be given plenty of notice before the old app is shut down for good and have been reassured that vouchers and coupons won't be affected.

The new coupons are entirely digital, so can be accessed via the Clubcard app. Customers need only download the Tesco Grocery and Clubcard app or open the app if it's already installed.

Shoppers can then scroll down and click 'My Coupons' then select the coupon or coupons they want to use. These can be scanned individually at the till or, if shopping online, selected at the virtual checkout.
