Tesco carpark brawl: Shoppers ram car with trollies after hit-and-run leaves two injured

Shoppers used trolleys and a metal bar to ram a vehicle after two were injured in a hit-and-run in a supermarket car park.

Police issued an appeal for information after the incident on Sunday at a Tesco store in Rickmansworth, which began after security staff caught the suspected driver attempting to steal alcohol.

Footage widely shared on social media shows a blue Citroen C3, which police have said is a hire car, ramming multiple vehicles as it tries to escape an angry crowd of staff and shoppers.

Debris can be seen flying from the vehicles as the crowd scream at the driver to stop and 'get out of the car'and repeatedly ask 'what is he doing?'.

The vehicle is severely dented and has lost its wing mirrors and rear window while two men attempted to ram it with a trolley and another brandishes a metal bar.

One man manages to wrench the driver's door open after the car stalls, but a bystander can be heard telling him to 'leave them in the car' before the driver screeches forward, scattering onlookers before crashing again.

The driver is not visible in the footage but a woman can be seen in the front passenger seat covering her face and bracing herself against the collisions.

The incident left one person badly hurt in Watford General Hospital while a second shopper was treated for minor injuries, Hertfordshire Police said.

Officers are still trying to locate the car and its occupants after it escaped by cutting across a row of parking bays and speeding off.

In a statement issued on Christmas Eve police asked anyone who witnessed the incident, or who saw the car before or after the incident to contact PC David Johnson of the road policing unit or call Crimestoppers.@

“At 1.57pm today (December 23) police were called to a report of a car being in collision with several people outside the Tesco store in Harefield Road, Rickmansworth,” they said.

“The vehicle – a blue Citroen C3, a hire car with a registration of KW18 HGK – did not stop, but left the scene.

“It’s believed the driver and passenger were involved in an incident inside the store moments before the collision, where a person was challenged by the store’s security after attempting to steal alcohol.

“Officers are continuing to work to locate the vehicle and its occupants.”
