Tesco, Asda and Morrisons gave out free £275 supermarket vouchers to struggling families

January is never an easy month when it comes to finances but help was at hand for some.

There were opportunities for households to get access to up to around £275 worth of supermarket and energy vouchers to help out.

The extra cash came in the form of The Household Support Fund.

A pot of cash - £500m in total - was split between councils and designed to be given to those most in need, reports Yorkshire Live.

How the funds were distributed was up to the local council.

Nottingham city residents receiving council tax support were given the opportunity to claim up to £248 extra to help with their household food and energy bills this winter.

It was previously reported that people of Nottingham could claim in two periods from Monday, December 6, to Monday, January 21, and again from Tuesday, February 1, to Thursday, March 31, enabling households to claim vouchers twice to help through the winter months.

However, due to significant demand, the city council confirmed that all the vouchers went before Christmas.

It was felt that, given the demand, it was right to release all the vouchers during the Christmas period to help households during such an expensive time of year, rather than holding some vouchers back for the New Year.

The supermarket and energy bill e-vouchers were issued on a first come first served basis.
