Tesco, Asda, Aldi, Morrisons, and Sainsbury's shoppers can now be fined £200 for breaking rules in store

As of today, all supermarket staff in England are required by law to wear face masks while working.

Up until now, only shoppers had been required to cover their faces while in store, but Boris Johnson has now made it compulsory for staff to do the same in shops and supermarkets.

Speaking in the House of Commons yesterday, the Prime Minister said: "We will extend the requirement to wear face coverings to include staff in retail, all users of taxis and private hire vehicles, and staff and customers in indoor hospitality, except when seated at a table to eat or drink."

As well as new rules for staff, the amount shoppers can be fined for refusing to comply with the rules has also been increased.

Anybody caught flouting the rules can now be fined £200 - so refusing to wear a mask while buying a pint of milk and some bin bags could result in the largest shopping bill of your life.

Earlier today, Aldi's CEO, Giles Hurley, asked shoppers to be considerate when in store.

In an email to shoppers, he wrote: "As we continue to battle this virus together, I want to reassure you that the comprehensive safety measures we put in place in our stores at the start of the pandemic are still very much in place – and will remain so for as long as they are necessary.

Asda, Tesco, Aldi, Sainsbury's and Morrisons shoppers warned against stockpilingunder new lockdown rules

"We ask that customers continue to wear a face covering when shopping with us, unless they are exempt from doing so.

"Our store colleagues will also continue to wear face coverings whilst working in store."
