Tesco gives update on home delivery service as demand increases

Supermarket giant Tesco has given an update on changes to its delivery service in Ireland saying the measures are 'working well'.

The chain has said it has increased the number of pickers and drivers and is starting earlier to pick orders in-store at 2am and 4am.

A Tesco spokeswoman said: "Measures like these have enabled us to open new delivery slots for home delivery and Click+Collect services over the coming days and weeks.

"Our slot availability is refreshed daily, so we recommend keeping an eye on our website tesco.ie for the latest slot availability.

"We continue to ask customers who can shop in store to do so and to 'think before you click' so that delivery slots can be prioritised for those that need them most."

Meanwhile Tesco stores in the UK say they will be supporting the most vulnerable customers by offering 1.2 million deliveries per week.

Tesco CEO, Dave Lewis, emailed customers with the latest on shopping slots and changes in store as the UK and Ireland both remain in lockdown.

The shopping chain revealed it's continuing to support its most vulnerable customers, having offered almost one million delivery slots this week, which is "around 400,000 more than six weeks ago."

However, the store has promised it will extend this further, Belfast Live reports.

The letter stated: "We'll increase this to 1.2 million deliveries per week in the next few weeks."

Tesco also confirmed it is working with the Government in the UK, which has issued the store with a list of who they consider to be vulnerable, and will offer those people priority access to delivery slots.

Dave Lewis, CEO, said: "Ensuring we support our most vulnerable customers is our priority. This week we have almost 1 million delivery slots, which is around 400,000 more than we had six weeks ago.

"We’ll increase this to 1.2 million deliveries per week in the next few weeks.

"The Government has given us a list of who they consider to be vulnerable people, and we’re offering those people priority access to delivery slots.

"We’re also now actively working with the Government to see how we can increase our capacity to help an expanded list of people who might not be on their critical vulnerable list, but who might need our support.

"We want to continue to free up as many slots as possible, so if you can shop in-store or have someone do it for you, please do."

He finished off the letter by thanking staff and customers for their support and patience and wrote: "Take care and stay well. Together, we can do this."
