Tesco, Sainsbury's and Waitrose have changed who is allowed to enter supermarkets during lockdown

Now England is in its second full lockdown, the UK's major supermarkets are adjusting their rules and guidelines to ensure that everyone is kept safe.

As a result, many retail giants are asking people to shop alone where possible, and are not permitting couples and families from shopping together if it's not necessary.

Sainsbury's has already installed a 'one shopper one trolley' rule, and is encouraging people to shop alone wherever possible.

It said: "We have also put queuing systems in place outside stores and ask you to queue at a safe distance of two metres apart.

"Our store teams will be asking groups with more than one adult to choose one adult to shop and will ask other adults to wait.

"Children are welcome if they are not able to stay at home."

Now Tesco and Waitrose have followed suit.

Tesco asked that "only one person from each household comes in-store to do their shopping".

Waitrose is also encouraging shoppers to visit alone, saying this will "help us manage the number of people in our shops by sending only one member of the household to do their shopping."

According to Birmingham Live, the guidance adds: "While this won’t be possible for everybody, we are very grateful for our customers’ support during this time of uncertainty."
