Tesco and Asda stop selling Grolsch as lager will no longer be available in UK

Shoppers will no longer be able to find Grolsch lager bottles in Tesco and Asda supermarkets.

The Dutch beer is recognisable by its distinctive green glass bottles and swig-top lids.

But now the owner Asahi group have confirmed its brewing deal with its UK manufacturer has come to an end, Birmingham Mail reports.

A spokesperson said, "After 35 years, Asahi and Molson Coors have agreed to end the joint venture agreements for the Grolsch brand in the UK and Ireland. As a result, Grolsch is no longer available in the UK and Ireland."

The 10 cheapest areas in the UK to get a pint

The spokesperson declined to comment on whether the lager would return to the UK and Ireland.

The rise of craft beers and lagers, cheaper rivals and lower alcohol alternatives are thought to have contributed to the decrease in popularity of Grolsch.

The Grolsch Brewery was founded in 1515 Groenlo, the Netherlands. At the time the town was known as Groelle, which is the inspiration behind the lager's name.
