Tesco and Asda reveal lockdown rules on buying non-essential items in England

Tesco and Asda have confirmed whether shoppers can buy 'non-essential' items in lockdown.

There was some confusion in November's lockdown when some sections of stores selling non-essential items were sealed off.

But the retail giants have confirmed this will not happen during the third lockdown, reports Teeside Live.

Some stores in areas across the South West taped off some aisles, or blocked them using cages.

Some stores in other parts of the country blocked off upstairs areas in line with guidelines stating separate areas selling non-food items should close.

This did not affect single-floor stores.

There are no plans to do the same this time around and Tesco says it is following current guidance. In England, non-essential items can continue to be sold in a "mixed retail" setting where food and other essential items are on sale.

General merchandise and clothing departments will stay open and customers will be able to pick those items up during their essential visits.

Asda has also said it has not made any changes in its stores regarding the sale of non-essential items.

Its supermarkets will continue to sell non-food items and clothing, however, the restrictions have meant its standalone Asda Living and George stores have all closed temporarily.
