Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, Supervalu and Dunnes on whether they expect customers to wear face masks as guidelines updated

The Government is asking people to consider wearing face masks in supermarkets now that Ireland has entered phase two of reopening.

Masks are not mandatory but it is advised that people wear them in enclosed areas like supermarkets and public transport.

All supermarkets in Ireland have advice on their websites as to what they recommend regarding face coverings.

Here's what each of the main chains saw about if you need one in their stores or not;

Face mask rules in Irish supermarkets

Tesco

Tesco Ireland states: "As face coverings are recommended, but not mandatory, it's a Colleague/ Customer's personal choice as to whether they want to wear a face covering in our stores as an added hygiene measure.

"We encourage all colleagues and customers continue to use our hand sanitisation stations, practise respiratory etiquette and follow social distancing measures in place in all our stores to protect both our colleagues and our customers."

Aldi

Aldi state that it is up to individuals as to whether they want to wear masks or not - the same applies to staff.

A spokesperson said: "Our store teams have been provided with protective gloves, facemasks and hand sanitiser. Gloves and facemasks are not mandatory for our Colleagues at this time."

Lidl

Lidl have no separate rules on facemasks and ask customers to follow Government advice.

Dunnes Stores

Dunnes have not made masks mandatory either and leave it up to staff and customers.

They state on their website: "We have made available a substantial quantity of gloves and masks for our staff to wear, and also gloves for customers. We offer this choice because some people feel safer wearing gloves.

"However we continue to recommend the HSE guidelines of continuing to wash hands every 30 minutes as one of the most important measures in stopping the spread of the Covid 19 Coronavirus."

Supervalu

A spokesperson said: "As per the advice of the CMO and An Taoiseach, wearing of face masks in supermarkets is encouraged but not compulsory.

Individual stores will ultimately reserve the right to make their decisions on their store policy around this."
