Terry the 'legend and fighter' wins battle with coronavirus

The friends and family of a popular man who today left hospital after winning his battle with coronavirus have credited medical staff with saving his life.

Terry McMaddy is now with his family after recovering from Covid-19 - which at one point left him needing a ventilator.

His loved ones have praised those at Broadgreen Hospital who helped him through a 10 day fight for survival in the intensive care unit.

Terry suffered a brain haemorrhage at just six weeks old and is blind, epileptic and suffers paralysis.

Close friend Lynsey Owens said Terry, now 53, has "been a fighter since he was a baby" - but that everyone was worried when he was admitted first to the Royal, then transferred to Broadgreen.

She said: "We just thought 'oh no' - this isn't looking good. When he was put on a ventilator and you hear it's 50/50 we worried he was not going to make it.

"I was so upset about it - nothing else mattered. And then all of a sudden he was off the ventilator, which I couldn't believe, and he's out!

"He's a legend and a fighter - if anyone can do it, he can."

Terry, who is from Aigburth, left Broadgreen on Saturday morning and is now staying with one of his brothers.

Lynsey praised the care he was afforded at hospital - where nurses offered updates on his progress and even helped him contact family through Facetime because they could not visit him on the ward.

She said: "We would all like to say a massive thank you to all the amazing staff at Broadgreen Hospital who have helped to save his life after contracting this horrendous disease.

"We are all absolutely over the moon at this amazing news, and want to say a huge thank you to everyone involved."

Lynsey said Terry's friends and family now hope to throw him a big party when lockdown social restrictions come to an end.
