Terry Gilliam has lashed out at Black Panther, calling the film “utter bulls***” and claiming the crew had “never been to Africa”.
The Monty Python writer and star was asked in a recent interview if he thought that critical praise for the Oscar-winning film was a politically correct response that "ignored aesthetics in favour of identity politics".
“It makes my blood boil,” Gilliam told IndieWire. “I hated Black Panther. It makes me crazy. It gives young black kids the idea that this is something to believe in. Bulls***. It’s utter bulls***.”
Gilliam, who is currently promoting his new film The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, then made the incorrect claim that Black Panther’s crew had never visited Africa before working on the film.
“I think the people who made it have never been to Africa. They went and got some stylist for some African pattern fabrics and things,” he said, “but I just hated that movie, partly because the media were going on about the importance of bulls***.”
The Black Panther team did in fact visit Africa, with director Ryan Coogler taking a team to learn about the continent’s history. Some scenes of the film were also shot in South Africa, Zambia and Uganda.
A sequel to Black Panther is scheduled for release on 6 May 2020.
