Three students were wounded in a terrorist attack that targeted a school west of the Libyan capital Tripoli.

The Libyan National Army said the bomb was placed inside a backpack and went off in a school in the city of al-Zawiya, 40 kilometers west of Tripoli.

The students were lightly injured in the blast.

No one claimed responsibility for the attack, but the LNA said its bore the hallmarks of terrorist groups, such as ISIS, Ansar al-Sharia, Shura Benghazi, al-Nusra Front and others.

Separately, intelligence information obtained by the LNA revealed that Syrian mercenaries were being deployed to the frontlines of the fighting between the army and Government of National Accord (GNA).

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a military official said the mercenaries were being pushed to the various frontlines around Tripoli, where the GNA and its militias have been fending an LNA offensive since April.

The local militias have been deployed behind the mercenaries, he told Asharq Al-Awsat.

An LNA field commander said that intermittent clashes had erupted overnight around Tripoli, most notably near its southern suburbs and airport road.

East of Misrata, the LNA struck militia positions in the Abugrein region. The military has continued to amass its forces after leaving heavy losses in the militia ranks.
