NEW YORK _ Investigators have disrupted an Islamic State-inspired plot to target New York concerts, landmarks and subways, authorities said Friday.
Places targeted included Times Square and the city subway system. The three conspirators also wanted to shoot patrons of local concerts.
The suspects were identified as 19-year-old Canadian citizen Abdulrahman El Bahnasawy, 19-year-old Tala Haroon, a U.S. citizen residing in Pakistan, and Russel Salic, 37, of the Philippines.
The would-be terrorists wanted to wound as many people as possible in attacks they were planning for the summer of 2016, officials said. They also wanted to plant bombs and shoot people in parts of the city during the holy month of Ramadan.
El Bahnasawy allegedly bought bomb-making materials and rented a cabin near the city to build and store explosive devices, according to federal court papers.
Haroon planned to meet with bomb experts in Pakistan and move to New York to join his colleague, according to authorities.
Salic allegedly wired money to the U.S. to fund the operation.
The three wanted to "support ISIS" but their plans never got off the ground, officials said.
