'Terror incident' confirmed, taxi driver leaves hospital and over 40s Covid boosters

Liverpool Women's Hospital car blast confirmed as 'terror incident'

Police have confirmed they are treating the Liverpool Women's Hospital taxi blast as a "terrorist incident".

Speaking at a press conference today Assistant Chief Constable and Head of Counter Terrorism Police North West Russ Jackson said the device was brought into the taxi and believed to be manufactured by the passenger.

ACC Jackson said they are unsure of the motive behind the attack and said they "cannot at this time draw any connection" with Remembrance Sunday events near the Women's Hospital but confirmed "it is a line of inquiry".

Chief Constable Serena Kennedy said: "No specific threat to the area but have asked for patrols to be increased."

Taxi driver hurt in terror attack released from hospital

The taxi driver hurt in the terror attack outside Liverpool Women's has been released from hospital.

In a press briefing today, Assistant Chief Constable Russ Jackson, head of Counter Terrorism North West, confirmed the driver had been treated for his injuries.

Mr Jackson said he had made a remarkable escape, he said: "As the taxi approached the drop off point at the hospital, an explosion occurred from within car, which quickly engulfed it in flames.

"Remarkably, the taxi driver, escaped from the cab. He has been treated for the injuries he sustained and has now been released from hospital."

Covid booster jabs to be offered to all over 40s

Covid-19 booster jabs are to be offered to all people over 40, according to the UK government's vaccine advisers.

The JCVI (Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation) has said the programme should be extended, with Health and Social Care Secretary Sajid Javis asking the NHS to "prepare to offer those eligible a vaccine as soon as possible".

Mr Javid said: "Our Covid-19 vaccination rollout has been a phenomenal success, saving countless lives, reducing pressure on the NHS and helping us stop the spread of the virus.

"We know immunity to Covid-19 begins to wane after six months and new data published today shows a third dose boosts protection against symptomatic infection to more than 90% - this highlights just how important it is that everyone eligible gets their top-up jabs as soon as possible."
