Terrifying police chase through streets as fleeing driver almost hits ambulance

Dashcam footage shows a dramatic 100mph police chase through Belfast as the fleeing driver almost hits a pedestrian and an ambulance.

Driver Stephen McKeag mounted footpaths, drove through red lights and forced traffic to swerve out the way during the chase.

The incident happened last October, with McKeag, from Newtownards, County Down, Northern Ireland, jailed for ten months in June after pleading guilty to charges of dangerous driving and driving without insurance.

But officers for Police Service Northern Ireland released the footage yesterday as a warning to the public about stopping when asked by police.

He was finally snared when he drove into a narrow street and got momentarily stuck between two cars, giving police time to box him in, reports Belfast Live.

PSNI Inspector Rosie Leech said: “What you’re about to see shows a police pursuit.

"It shows the subject vehicle failing to stop for red lights, driving on the footpath, driving at excessively high speeds through built up areas, you see it almost crash into an ambulance. Lucky the ambulance wasn’t coming for him.”

The pursuit begins at Garmoyle Street, through Dock Street, Corporation street and to Donegall Quay.

Police eventually stop it at Frances Street.

Inspector Leech added: “So what was this all about? It turns out that this driver was uninsured.

“He would likely have been prosecuted and had his vehicle seized, instead of which, he went to court on a litany of dangerous driving charges and he got 10 months in prison.

"So the message is simple, when the police ask you to stop, you need to stop.”
