Terrifying ordeal of couple who were robbed and burgled by 'men in black' - and then locked in cellar

A couple endured a terrifying ordeal at the hands of two 'men in black' who robbed them in the street, burgled their home, and then imprisoned one of the victims in a cellar.

The man and woman were spoken to by two men, dressed in all black, between 3am and 5am today (Sunday) in Old Moat Park, off Mauldeth Road, Withington.

The robbers were armed with a knife and hatchet. The woman and her male friend were made to lie face down in the park for 45 minutes while the criminals checked their bank cards.

They were then marched to her home in Hill Street where the woman's boyfriend was asleep. Her boyfriend was woken up and robbed too. His mobile phone, cash and bank cards were stolen.

All three were then held hostage for an hour while the robbers stole other items before leaving in the woman's car. Before leaving they cut the phone lines at the house.

The entire ordeal lasted three hours.

Detective Constable Martyn Gibson of GMP’s City of Manchester Division said: “These people were subjected to a terrifying ordeal.

“Not content at having robbed the woman and her friend, these two men then marched her back to her property where the offence continued.

“We would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time, has information or potentially dashcam or CCTV footage to get in touch immediately.”

One of the offenders is described as a black man approximately 5ft 5ins tall, dressed all in black. The second is described as a white man, approximately 5ft 8ins tall dressed all in black.

Police can be contacted on 101. Alternatively, contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
