Terrifying moment teens encounter crocodile while swimming in tourist hotspot

A group of teenagers have gone viral on TikTok after posting a holiday video showing their petrifying face-to-face encounter with a crocodile.

The group were on holiday in the beautiful destination of Tulum, Mexico, and posted a video that showed them swimming in the crystal-clear water.

But they were in for a nasty shock when one of their friends ducked their head under the water and saw something lurking just a few feet away.

To their horror, they quickly realise it was a crocodile.

In the video, the person jumps back above the water and screams (in Spanish) “no way, it’s coming towards me!"

The nail-biting video then shows the reptile slowly circling the group as the teenagers panic.

But in a rare stroke of luck, the crocodile swims away and leaves the holidaymakers unharmed.

Osmar Ochoa who shot the video said: “I was more than scared, I was shocked, my friends were even more scared than me.”

The video has reached 9.7million views and over 755,000 likes on TikTok and viewers could not believe their eyes.

One TikToker said in the comments: “I would NEVER swim in that water,” while another wrote: “Hell noooo.”

One commenter morbidly joked that the croc spared them because it “wasn’t hungry.”

And one person even confidently stated: “He’s extremely friendly. Been there done that.”

But a fifth user warned: “They really were lucky, where I live is infested and they have already eaten many people including children.”

The friends were swimming in a cenote – a large cave filled with cool, clear rainwater – in Tulum.

The crocodile may be Panchito, a Moreletii crocodile which, according to the Yucatan Times, swims peacefully with tourists in Tulum.

Mr Ochoa has had a high-adrenaline holiday, with the croc video showing only one of the hair-raising situations he’s found himself in.

One of his other videos is captioned “Ejemplo de como NO saltar de un avion” – or, in English: “Example of how NOT to jump out of a plane.”

The video is as scary as it sounds, showing Mr Ochoa preparing to skydive, getting ready to jump from a nausea-inducing height.

It shows him holding on to the legs of a companion – before the two jump, quickly become detached and are sent flying apart from each other.

Mr Ochoa explained in the caption: “No one was hurt, they didn’t explain the right way to grab us.”

In the comments of another video in which Mr Ochoa talks about the meal he had after skydiving, someone asked: “I mean, you drop out of the sky, and assuming you don’t have a heart attack… you’re offered a hotdog?”

Mr Ochoa replied: “Letting yourself fall from the sky is the cool thing about the experience hahahaha.

"And it is very difficult to have a heart attack, since you are loaded with adrenaline.”
