Terrifying moment plane's landing gear tears off in dramatic emergency approach

A plane making a dramatic emergency approach to an airport saw part of its landing gear torn off as the pilots managed to safely bring the huge jet back down.

The airliner which was on its way to Chicago in the United States had to turn back to Luxembourg shortly after take off when the pilot realised there was a technical issue on board.

With fire engines on standby, the Boeing 747 came back into land and as it touched down had a "significant landing incident" according to Cargolux, the plane's operator.

The aircraft had already dumped fuel in a bid to bring the bird back in safely to the airport.

Footage which appears to have been filmed by emergency crews waiting to help the stricken craft, shows the plane making its approach.

"Woah, woah, woah, s**t," a woman behind the camera can be heard saying as the plane touches down and a part of the landing gear breaks free and spins off in another direction.

Dust and smoke can be seen rising from the runway before the broken piece also comes to a stop.

The fire truck then rushes towards the plane to help the crew on board.

Pictures show significant damage to the fuselage, a missing wheel and crumpled bodywork under the body of the aircraft.
