Terrifying moment horse collapses while pulling carriage of tourists in 40C heat

A shocking video shows the horrifying moment a horses collapsed while pulling a carriage in 40C heat.

Horrified onlookers filmed the events unfolding as the desperate animal collapsed while pulling a carriage of tourists in Majorca.

Temperatures had skyrocketed to 40C (104F) in Palma, the capital city, on Saturday (July 23) when the horse collapsed in Juan Carlos I Square.

Witnesses urged the driver to get water for the poor animal as it lay collapsed, while also encouraging the tourists sitting in the carriage to get out of their seats to help.

The local animal rights party leader has said he will be making an official complaint about what happened to the horse, according to the Daily Mail.

Guillermo Amengual is the president of Progreso en Verde, which believes carriage rides pulled by horses should be illegal because it equates to animal exploitation.

Speaking about the incident, he said to local media: "It could have been heatstroke or the result of the animal not being suitable to be used in this way because of its age or other factors.

"We're going to denounce this because it's the third time something similar has happened in the last two months and we have to get to the bottom of what's happened."

A video of the incident showed a man, believed to be horse's owner although that is not confirmed, trying to pull the animal up after it had collapsed.

The other horse pulling the carriage stood to the side, as three people in the carriage stayed sitting down and watched on.

A Spanish-speaking woman approached the group after the horse collapsed and told the people sitting in the carriage to get down while saying "water, give it water" to the driver.

Thankfully, the horse did eventually rise but it's not known whether it continued taking the holidaymakers on their tour.

Palma City Hall has not yet responded to this incident or a similar incident in which a horse collapsed not far away from this incident a month and a half ago.

In June this year, police pulled over and stopped a carriage that was being pulled by an elderly horse that shouldn't have been working.

The horse was spotted limping.

It comes after Palma City Hall has recently started considering replacing horses with "electric alternatives" to pull the carriages for tourists.

Progreso en Verde said earlier this month that horses are still being worked in high temperatures, which breaches new regulations around their health and safety.
