Terrifying moment family attempt to leap from their car as it falls from cliff edge

This is the dramatic moment a family attempted to jump out of a moving car that was rolling over the edge of a cliff at a Chinese beauty spot.

One passenger reportedly was unable to scramble out in time and suffered severe injuries after the vehicle fell by the Xinjiang Duku Highway.

The family were taking in the view at the picturesque setting before a man who was standing by the driving seat with the door open started shouting as the car moved forward.

Shocking footage shows a boy jumping out of one the back seats along with an older woman but the passenger in front, apparently unable to unbutton her seatbelt in time, is still inside when the car goes over the edge.

The family look on in horror as another man also runs over in a desperate attempt to help.

Heijing County Emergency Management Bureau reportedly said that the passenger in the front did survive the fall but suffered severe hip injuries.

It is unknown whether there was a fault with the handbrake or if it was not applied properly.

The family’s trip out comes as China has reimposed a lockdown due to a rise in the Delta variant.

Millions of people have been confined to their homes as authorities try and bring the number of infections down.

The new variant has been reported in over 20 cities and Beijing is among the cities where residential compounds have been cordoned off amid strict quarantine measures.

The central city of Zhuzhou in Hunan province has ordered over 1.2 million residents to stay home under strict lockdown for the coming days as it rolls out a citywide testing and vaccination campaign, according to an official statement.
