Terrifying moment child peered over roof edge after scaling five-storey old Swansea school

This picture is probably enough to horrify any parent. It shows a child precariously perched five storeys up on the roof of an old Swansea school.

Police were called to the former Manselton Primary School in Manor Road after reports a number of youngsters had found their way onto the roof, on Wednesday evening, September 18.

Two 14-year-olds were subsequently spoken to by police and returned to their parents.

The incident is the just the latest in which children have been spotted scaling scaffolding around the disused building, leading it to be labelled a 'giant climbing frame'.

Manselton Primary School closed in 2012 after 27 years, merging with nearby Cwmbwrla Primary to form Burlais Primary, although the Grade II listed building has existed for more than a century.

But for the past couple of years it has been a target for youngsters who have broken into the grounds.

Children have repeatedly been spotted entering the old Manselton Primary School (Rmelen)

They have even been reported to have entered the building with backpacks and stayed overnight, allegedly throwing fire extinguishers through windows onto the yard below.

Their presence on site has prompted safety fears, with councillors warning they are at risk of serious injury.

Antisocial behaviour - what is it?

Cwmbwrla councillor Peter Black said: “We are doing our best to keep the site secure, and Swansea Council is using its statutory powers to try and make sure people do not get in.

“Unfortunately the scaffolding has to be maintained to protect the fabric of the building, because the walls are pervious to rain.

“Climbing on the building is dangerous and reckless and parents should be aware of where their children are and should keep them away from the school, because if it carries on someone will get hurt and we do not want that to happen”.

The property is owned by Eton Property Management, based in Northampton.

It lodged a pre-planning application in 2016 for the conversion of the former school into 62 residential units, along with 12 flats and a car park.

But after objections were lodged there has been little activity at the site.

The company declined to make any comment following the latest activity on the building.

A South Wales Police spokesman said: “We attended a report of people on the roof of a derelict school in Manor Road at about 6.20pm.

“Two 14-year-old male youths were located on the roof and were spoken to and returned to their parents. They have also been referred to the anti-social behaviour team”.
