Terrifying moment car flips onto its roof and is inches away from smashing into pedestrians...a woman has been arrested for drink driving

This is the heart-stopping moment a suspected drink-driver flipped their car onto its roof and almost wiped out a pedestrian.

The 'terrifying' scene was captured on CCTV in Nelson, Lancashire, on Sunday morning (March 8).

Footage shows the pedestrian jumping out of the way as the silver Ford - with two women inside - flipped over and hurtled past them.

The skidding wreckage narrowly avoided hitting the member of the public by a 'few steps' before smashing into three shops on the side of the road.

A 28-year-old female was arrested on suspicion of drink driving following the incident, Lancashire Police confirmed.

Najma Kalsoom, 43, and her daughter were driving on the opposite side of the road when they spotted the vehicle whizz past.

As the business owner checked her rear mirror, she saw the car flip over.

She pulled over immediately and rushed towards the vehicle to help free those inside.

Najma, from Nelson, said: "It was really terrifying. I was so scared that the driver was dead. It's a miracle those girls made it out.

"It's a 30mph road and I would say there is no chance she was going less than 70mph.

"They were lucky the road was quiet. There was a pedestrian there.

"I can't believe how it happened - God was watching over them.

"If it had been a split-second earlier, it could have been fatal.

"I'd say it was a metre away from hitting her."

Ms Kalsoom and several other witnesses helped rescue the passengers, who she said 'just walked off' afterwards and were 'quite threatening'.

The female driver is believed to have fled the scene, but was caught up with soon after by a concerned member of the public.

"[The driver] had a head injury - I had her blood on my hands", Najma added.

"But they just walked off and were quite threatening. I thought of that as a traumatic experience.

"I didn't think bad of it because everyone reacts differently."

"There was something slumped at the back - it just looked like a corpse. The other lads [who witnessed the crash] had to get a saw and cut the other passenger's seat belt.

"When the other passenger came out, the girl started shouting and saying 'pull yourself together. What are you crying for?'

"I took it as being the impact of the trauma. I just thought she was in shock.

"It was scary, but I think my adrenaline must have kicked in and I did what I have to do.

Najma said the pedestrian 'could have died' if the crash happened a 'couple of seconds earlier'.

Police and ambulance rushed to the scene after Najma's daughter called the emergency services.

Lancashire Police have since confirmed that a female was arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said: "We were called to an incident just before 10.30am on Sunday, March 8, following reports of a collision between two cars on Manchester Road [Nelson].
