Terrifying moment Boeing passenger plane catches fire after take off with flames erupting from the engine

This is the terrifying moment a Boeing passenger plane bursts into flames mid-air just after takeoff - with fire seen shooting out of the engine.

The Delta Airlines flight’s engine appeared to catch alight moments before being forced to divert back to Los Angeles.

In the shocking footage, the jet - a Boeing 776-400 - can be seen veering slightly left as the engine erupts into flames.

The appalled onlooker recording the footage can be heard over the camera saying: “Oh, look at that. Woah!

“Was that a compressor stall? What’s going on?”

The aircraft continues to fly ahead as the horrifying fire blazes on under the plane’s engine.

The Atlanta-bound plane was forced to return back to Los Angeles.

The incident occured on a Delta Airlines flight in the US

The footage depicts the flight descending back onto the tarmac, where its landing gear thankfully comes down before the plane lands, and the fire appears to stop.

Once the flight safely landed, emergency vehicles can be seen rushing towards the aircraft to help. The jet is finally seen being escorted off the runway and back towards its bay.

A spokesperson for Delta Airlines told the BBC: "Delta flight 446 returned to Los Angeles shortly after departure following an indication of an issue with the aircraft's left engine."

The footage was recorded by the YouTube channel ‘LA Flights’, which is run by creators Josh and Peter.

It comes after another Delta Airlines flight was diverted, following a fire caused by an item a passenger brought onboard.

According to an eyewitness, during the incident, screams were heard, smoke filled the cabin, and flight attendants rushed to extinguish the blaze.

Delta confirmed that flight 1334 - a Boeing 757 from Atlanta, Georgia, to Fort Lauderdale, Florida - was diverted on Monday due to a battery fire.

The airline stated that attendants “worked quickly” to extinguish the blaze when a battery belonging to a passenger spontaneously combusted - a spokesperson told USA Today.
