Terrifying dashcam footage shows driver swerve to avoid huge lorry heading straight for him

Dashcam footage has captured the shocking moment a lorry and driver both had to swerve to avoid a horrifying impact after the HGV drifted onto the wrong side of the road.

The video shows how the vehicles were inches away from disaster on a 60mph stretch of road near Fochriw, Merthyr Tydfil.

The close-call happened at 6.15pm on Monday, October 7 (the dashcam clock is an hour behind) on a road passing the Biffa landfill site near a junction with the busy A465 Heads of the Valleys Road.

Nathan Murphy, 33, the driver of the car, said he "honestly thought that was it," as he turned the blind bend to be met by the truck coming straight towards him.

"A split second later and this would have been a completely different situation. There was no way that I would have survived the impact at that speed, but that's not worth thinking about," said the married father-of-one from Fochriw.

The lorry, with lights flashing on its cab, clearly drifts on to the opposite side of the road. Just in time, both vehicles turn to avoid a collision before Mr Murphy pulls over in a lay-by in shock at his lucky escape.

"I'm extremely relieved they saw me at the last second," he added.

He said he was on his way to Asda in Merthyr Tydfil after finishing his shift as an electrical engineer in Cardiff when the near-miss happened.

Most days he will use that road and usually has his wife and child with him. But he said he had never experienced something like this before.

He said he had not reported the incident to the police but had contacted the company responsible for the truck, and was yet to hear back.
