Officers were out on patrol when they came under fire from rockets and were forced to retreat.

Hooded youths were heard cheering as they launched volley after volley at the van and stunned witnesses looked on in disbelief.

The incident is said to have happened in the Firth Park area of Sheffield on Thursday, October 31.

A youth filming the action on his mobile phone cries: "What the...? Whoa."

As the barrage intensifies, the officers decide to pull away to safety before the footage cuts out.

A second video filmed in Firth Park Road shows laughing youths launching fireworks at businesses.

Police responded to a disturbance in the area and recovered fireworks but no arrests were made.

Buses were also cancelled after being pelted by eggs, the Sheffield Star reported.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Neighbourhood officers were patrolling in the Firth Park area of Sheffield at around 6pm on October 31 when they came across a group of people setting off fireworks in the direction of vehicles.

"Officers recovered an amount of fireworks from Firth Park and a neighbouring road.
