Terrified teen attacked by hammer-wielding thug in city centre robbery

A teenager was knocked to the ground by a hammer-wielding robber during a terrifying city centre ambush.

Merseyside Police are appealing for witnesses after the 19-year-old was set upon as he walked home close to Chinatown in Liverpool city centre during the early hours of this morning.

The victim was approached by the robber brandishing a hammer around 1am as he walked home in the Great George Square area.

A police spokesman said: "He was confronted by another man believed to be carrying a hammer. He pushed the victim to the ground before making off with his phone and wallet."

The attacker is described as white, in his 40s and spoke with a Liverpool accent.

He was also wearing a blue jacket and was riding a pedal bike.

Detective Inspector Graeme Towndrow said “This attack was completely unprovoked and has left the victim feeling rightfully fearful for his own safety.

"Luckily, he only suffered minor injuries and reported this incident to us."
