Terrified Scots students trapped in Barcelona apartment amid pro-Catalan riots

Scottish students were left terrified as Catalan pro-independence demonstrators clashed with riot police in the centre of Barcelona last night.

In a third day of protests thousands took to the streets after nine separatist leaders were jailed on Monday.

Police charged the crowd and fired foam bullets as protesters set fire to bins and cars near the interior department of the regional government in the city.

At least four street were blocked by burning containers.

One Scots student who was “trapped” in a flat near the city centre told the Record : “I saw fires being set off and petrol bombs being thrown.

“There were police officers in riot gear. My friends were calling family back home and crying and having panic attacks.

“We are all scared.”
